New Worship Times & More (March 4th)

Posted by Dave Clayton on 02/27/2012

We are in the midst of an exciting season at Ethos. Over the last several months we have had more people follow Jesus, be baptized, connect in house churches, and serve our city than at any other point in our church’s short history. As a result of God’s work among us, we have been at capacity or beyond capacity in nearly all of our worship gatherings for quite some time now. Since we believe that Jesus will continue to draw people to Him, we are making a few slight adjustments to help create more space for new people to be a part of our community.

NEW WORSHIP GATHERING TIMES | Begins March 4th
9AM, 11AM, 5PM, & 7PM

MORE SEATING
Over the last several months we have been able to squeeze 140 more chairs into our current worship space at every Worship Gathering. Currently, the majority of those seats are filled at every gathering, and the room is maxed out. To help open up more space, we have opened up the booth area (behind the bar) during our time of worship & teaching. Beginning this Sunday, there will be a live feed into the Booth Area where you, your friends, and your family can fully participate in worship and have a seat as well. This will help clear the back walls of the Cannery and keep us on good terms with the Fire Marshall.

PLEASE CARPOOL
If it is convenient to carpool, please do so. That will help out tremendously as we transition between worship gatherings.

Finally, please take a moment to thank Jesus for all He is doing in our city and in our church family. It is by his grace that we have the opportunity to work through some of the logistical challenges that we are facing. Thank you so much for your enthusiasm, your faith, and your continued flexibility as we enjoy and discover all that God has in store for our church family.

I love you guys.

Your brother,

Dave Clayton

Ethos India : Mission Update

Posted by Dave Clayton on 02/14/2012

GUEST POST FROM DOLLY STANG (ETHOS FAMILY MEMBER)

Dear Ethos Family,  As many of you may know, we have two church plants in Northeast India (near the city of Calcutta) in which several members of the Ethos and Lipscomb Community are going to be traveling to this Summer from May 26th-June 8th, 2012. This is going to be Ethos’ first trip to India to not only encourage our brothers and sisters in Christ overseas, but to help spread the Gospel of Christ to those who are lost and seeking a deeper meaning in a culture of countless gods, and heart-wrenching poverty.

I would love to encourage you all to start praying not only for our upcoming trip this summer (for safety, good health, and ‘cooler’ weather), but to be continually praying for the hearts of our family of Christ in India. They are the ones who are constantly facing challenges in a culture that shuns and persecutes Christianity. It gives me great encouragement to know that we are going to be in the care of such brave, courageous, and willing brothers and sisters in Christ while in India. I would also like to encourage everyone to please pray for our hearts (as a team) to be prepared to face whatever happens in India. I know we are going to be diving into a culture that many members have never been exposed to, so pray that God unites us as we share His Love in a new (and sometimes confusing) culture.

I would also like to open up and let everyone in the Ethos Family know that we are still in search of two (Male) students (or non-students) who would be willing (committed) to go to India this summer with our team. Originally we had 10 spots filled, but two spots have now become open. As a team, we ask that you please consider this with an open and prayerful heart. You can reach me at: dolly.stang@lipscomb.edu or find me on facebook “Dolly Stang” if you are interested in joining!

And yet another prayer to offer up would definitely be about our fund-raising for all the members of the team. Individually, we each have to raise around $2,500 (which includes airfare, lodging, travel, food, etc). As a team, we are brainstorming ideas for raising this amount of money by May which include (tshirt sales, babysitting, chick-fil-a night, benefit dinner, personal letters to friends/family, etc). Our talented team members have even designed their own stationary in which ALL the proceeds go to India (Lemon Tree Paper Co). We hope that through these various fund-raising ideas, our church family can come together and help us go to India!

More updates are soon to come. But I just wanted you all to be aware of what is going on with the first India-Ethos Mission trip! I pray that many more trips come in the future so EVERYONE can experience the rich, colorful, and beautiful culture of India!

7 Days of Prayer & Fasting

Posted by Dave Clayton on 02/13/2012

Yesterday was the 4th week of our teaching series REVIVAL. Together we have been studying through the Book of Ezra as we’ve looked at the work that God did in Ezra and through Ezra to bring about revival among God’s people.

In Ezra Chapter 9, the presence of God convicts the people of their sin, and they cry out to God for mercy on behalf of the church & city.

Today, Monday, February 13th, marks the beginning of 7 days of Prayer and Fasting for our church family. Hundreds of you signed up to Pray & Fast on one or multiple days during the course of this week. If you didn’t have a chance to sign up, that is quite alright. Just choose a day, and set it aside for the sole purpose of seeking God’s heart on behalf of our church & city.

FASTING
Quite simply put, fasting is the setting aside of food for the purpose of being reminded of our deep hunger and need for God. There are many ways to fast. Some people fast from sunrise to sunset. Others fast for the entire 24 hour period. Some fast from food completely, while others fast from choice foods and choose to only consume water, juice, fruit, and nuts. There are many ways to fast.

The purpose is to set aside intentional time to seek the Lord.

PRACTICALS
I’ve often found it helpful to set aside my normal meal times on a day of fasting for the purpose of reading the Bible, confessing sin, writing in a prayer journal, or sitting in solitude. The key is to find the ways in which you can contact best with God during your time of prayer.

I would recommend trying different postures of prayer (i.e. praying on your knees, praying as you stand, praying as you go for a walk, etc).

THINGS TO PRAY FOR
As a church family, we are focusing our days of prayer and fasting around several things. Feel free to use this as a guide to help you focus as we pray and fast together.

1. Confess your sin before God
2. Ask God to forgive the sins of our church family
3. Pray for other followers of Jesus in our city
4. Pray for  those in our city who are not follower of Jesus.
5. Pray for our city officials.
6. Pray that God’s will is accomplished fully IN us and THROUGH us.

Online Teaching-Ezra 8:15-36

Posted by Brandon Steele on 02/10/2012

GOD once again stirs the heart of a pagan king to move another wave of his people back to Jerusalem.  Cyrus had initially released all of the Jews (even though only 50,000 left) under the leadership of Sheshbazzar to return and now Artaxerxes opens the door for another group (5,000 who are willing) to head back under the leadership of Ezra.  The group gathers and Ezra notices there are no Levites among the 5,000 poised to leave exile for Jerusalem.  It doesn’t sound like a big deal to us, but this was a real problem for them, because the Levites were imperative for worship.  They were the only ones that could administer sacrifices, they were the only ones that could serve in the temple and more importantly, they were the only ones that could mediate between man and GOD.  Without them there was no forgiveness of sins, no with peace with GOD, no relationship with the Almighty.  Them not having Levites would be like us not having Jesus-there is no connection with GOD without them.  Luckily, 38 willing Levites from Kasiphia, a nearby town, caught word of their predicament, packed their bags, said their goodbyes and left on three days notice to go with the other 5,000 Jews back to Jerusalem.

But, before they set even one foot back on the interstate due west, they fasted and prayed.  It was going to be a 900-mile journey through the desert, in the heat of the summer, in one of the most dangerous parts of the world.  Can you imagine walking to New York from Nashville?  It doesn’t seem like a long distance to us or like it would be that difficult of a journey, but imagine that instead of the roads through Kentucky, West Virginia and Pennsylvania being the route you took, imagine the desert sands of Africa.  And on top of that, this was one of the most susceptible places for people to be robbed and murdered.  You were on the open road with no street lights, no police, no hotels, no McDonald’s (which wasn’t a bad thing), no shelter.  The open road was where thieves and criminals made their living by preying on unsuspecting travelers.  And what a wonderful target the people of GOD would be! Carrying literally 30 tons of silver and gold (our equivalent: $5 Billion).  You heard me.  It was an outrageous amount of money.

So here is the picture: 5,000 Jews traveling through enemy territory, in the desert, in the hottest part of the year, carrying $5 Billion.  Do you see why Ezra declared a fast and a time dedicated to prayer?

One more thing deserves our attention before we make the connection between this story and Jesus.  Did you notice that Ezra in verse 22 was ashamed to ask the King for protection for his trip?  He had proclaimed to the pagan King Artaxerxes that GOD’s hand was on his people and yet as he was on the 440 loop fixing to hop on 40 West, he realized what lay ahead of him; the peril that was on the horizon.

Have we ever proclaimed something to others that GOD said and then question, “But, what if GOD doesn’t?”  For example, what if we tell a friend that isn’t a believer that if he/she will give GOD a chance and seek him, he/she will find GOD?  GOD does clearly say this in scripture (James 4:8; Matthew 6:7-8) but do ever have those thoughts, “But what happens if GOD doesn’t show up?”  Or if you have a parent that is going through struggles, whether it be physical or spiritual, in life and you tell them that Jesus can heal them, which he claims to be able to do in Matthew 11, do you ever doubt, “But what if Jesus can’t or doesn’t?”  Sometimes we face these situation in life, these crossroads, where we realize that what we claim to believe and what we actually believe are two different things.  I’m going to make an assumption and say that Christians believe that Jesus can heal, especially when no one you love is sick.  The question is, do you really believe that Jesus can heal EVERY sickness when its your wife, your son, your granddaughter that has leukemia and has been given six weeks to live?  Now don’t hear what I’m not saying, Jesus doesn’t promise to heal every sickness on earth and that’s not the point I’m trying emphasize, what I’m wanting us to see is that the things we often times say that we believe about GOD are so many times different than what we actually believe about GOD.  Ezra, and some of GOD’s people made a bold statement to Artaxerxes, that “The gracious hand of their GOD is on everyone who looks to him, but his great anger is against all who forsake him.”  And now they stand a crossroads where they have to choose to either actually believe those words by walking in faith or recant their words, realize their beliefs were nothing more than wishful thinking and ask the King for help.

Their journey is anticlimactic to say the least.  We are given only one detail: they arrived safely with no harm inflicted.  And the recurring phrase, “The hand of our GOD was on us,” shows us why the trip was uneventful.  Throughout our study in Ezra hopefully we’ve gleaned one thing if nothing else-When GOD’s hand is on his people, no enemy, no force, no power can overcome them.  GOD is stronger, GOD is wiser, GOD is able to deliver his people.  Like Ezra, we must learn to beg for the hand of GOD on our lives, believe the things he has promised, notice His presence and make known the graciousness of GOD to others.

Jesus

One great connection in this story to Jesus is Ezra trusting GOD for the good of others, especially for non-believers.  Ezra trusted the character and the heart of GOD when faced with a situation where he could elevate and give credence to GOD’s word and power.  And because of this, GOD was able to display to non-believers his sovereignty.  Jesus faithfully trusted His Father and completely surrendered his will to that of His Father’s and because of that, it turned out for our good.  Jesus emptied himself of everything, lived out the true way of life, redeemed us from sin and will present us to GOD the Father as pure and blameless.  Jesus’ life, his willingness to trust GOD and his commands, turned out for our good.

May we look to Jesus today and worship him with reverence and awe!  His faithfulness was for our good.  And may our faithfulness be his delight.

GOD is working in our House Churches

Posted by Brandon Steele on 02/07/2012

Every week after our House Churches meet, every House Church Leader answers a few questions about how thing went.  Simple things like, “Who all came” and “What were the good things that happened.”  A couple of weeks ago, one of the questions was, “Where did you see GOD last night in your House Church?”  And for some reason the way our leaders responded really struck me.

I read about one of our Passion House Churches, how they went for a 5-mile run in the pouring rain and how they were reminded about the way GOD cleanses us and washes away all of the things that are not of him.

I read about single guys that are sponsoring 3 children through Compassion International by themselves.

I read about how the Ezra series and the REVIVAL that GOD was stirring 2500 years ago is directly speaking to people, its as if GOD were speaking the very things they needed to hear.

I read about how people are finding true community.  They are sharing life with people that love them despite their flaws, their sin and their inconsistency.  And about how they are growing in their love for GOD and others together.

I read about how GOD is stirring comfortable people to change.

I read about how people were coming alive talking about Jesus!

For some reason I felt compelled to share this with you this morning.  GOD, for whatever reason, continues to dwell among us, to pursue us even when we sin and to love us.

I hope you have a great day, but I hope its because your eyes are opened and you see the work, the movement, the presence of GOD.

I’ll leave you with these words from Colossians.  I don’t know if you’re like me, but I’m so forgetful in my faith.  I have a bad day or go through some temptation and  then I forget about how good Jesus is, I take my eyes, my focus off of him for one second and I forget how much I need him and how he is literally the only reason I’m at peace with GOD. So, I leave you with these words about Jesus, the one we serve!

“The Son is the image of the invisible GOD, the firstborn over all creation.  For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.  He is before all things, and in him all things hold together……For GOD was pleased to have all his fulness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or in heaven, by making peace through his blood shed on the cross.  Once you were alienated from GOD and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior.  But now he had reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation-if you continue in your faith, established and firm and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel.”  Colossians 1:15-21
